Liz: PAINt! I did... and love it -- hold up well (with quality products) too!
Remove doors and hardware... (label where they go back.) Clean. PRIME! Then put on two coats of a good latex! Reassemble cabinets --- treat gently for about a month... to let the paint cure.

If they are “foil” or Melamine, be careful when working around areas that have gouges or it’s worn through.
I would hand-Prime those areas with oil-based primer so that the particle board underneath doesn’t “mushroom” from exposure to water-based paints.
