Hello, there is lots of painting help here: https://www.hometalk.com/search/posts?filter=paint%20living%20room
If the current color is dark, prime it to make it lighter. Paint the edges first, then roll in the middle. Painting is my favorite way to change a room.
The first thing I do, is remove everything from the walls, wipe down the walls for dust and grime. Then I repair nail holes and any damaged areas. Once everything is smooth and clean, I prime/seal with Kilz before applying the new paint.

Always first step is to clean the walls. TSP is what I use. Check these out before you start.
