To avoid injuring the tree's root system it would be best to build an above ground pond. I have 2 of these little ponds and they are easy to set up and maintain.
A small black rubbermaid type water trough (50 to 70 gallons) from the farm store and a surround of your choice of stacked rock, brick, pavers or landscape block to finish it off. A fountain kit with spray head from the box store (wrap the pump in 1/2 yard of tulle netting, this must be changed and washed out every month or so.) Set pump in a 1 gallon black plastic pot with several fist sized rocks to hold it in place for aeration, 3 feeder gold fish and a few plants and you are done. If you don't want any fish you can skip the fountain but frogs and toads will lay their eggs in your little pond. Be sure it isn't in the sun or it will overheat and kill your plants, fish, tadpoles etc.
