First I'd wash it all & if the landlord will allow you to paint it, that's the route I would go. Quick, easy and makes a huge difference! If not I would tack up fabric or hang curtains. I'd find some panels that I really liked and could use eventually somewhere else. I wouldn't trust anything that has any kind of adhesive, there is bound to be some type of residue that you will have to clean off when you take it down. Good luck. Bathroom walls are usually smaller so maybe the fabric idea would be better. Velcro (double sided with adhesive would probably work better than tacks) and the small amount that stayed on the wall would easily come off with "Goo Gone".
Quick, cheap, easy would be to hang a very pretty series of shower curtains to hide the mess. You could even use a spring tension rod if the room is small.
