Sherry -- you can look for frames at Goodwill... just take the painting dimensions with you... and a tape measure. Then paint the frames to your liking!

DIY Pallet Wood Picture Frame
I would check Goodwill or Salvation army or yard sales. Our town swap shop always has stacks of frames, just empty, some with pictures.
Sherry....I just clean mine really good then add the paint. I spray a lot of them but do use a brush on some. If it's wood and dark I have even sanded a little, added primer and then paint.
I used lath on this painting (see pic). Go to your local Lowes or Home Depot and get several pieces of lath (usually in 8' lengths). Cut pieces to fit each side. Mine are mitered at the corners, but you can cut them without mitering. Just make sure to either cut the top/bottom or sides a little longer for the corners. Paint the pieces completely (edges and ends, too) before tacking to the sides of the painting (use very small nails so the lath does not split).
