Paint it! First sand any imperfections, fill any little dents or divets with wood filler and sand smooth. Paint a good coat of primer or two (you can get the primer tinted a little bit lighter than the actual paint you choose). After priming, paint. My MIL had wood paneling in her kitchen and den. She got the kitchen wallpapered in a white texture wall paper and then painted over that, and in the den she chose a very light pale green color. It turned out beautiful! It went from dungeon looking to bright and cheery!
Brenda....Clean well, fill grooves (I didn't), prime then paint.
Hi Brenda,
When I did the ones in a bedroom in our home, I filled in the grooves with non-shrinking wall putty, sanded it smooth after it dried, roughed up the paneling, applied a coat of primer then painted the whole thing. It made a huge difference. Wishing you the best.
Hello!
I found in my situation - paint was a great solution.
Proper prep can yield a successful job.
After walls are clean —prime and paint.
We have a log cabin and too much wood is overwhelming-dark and dreary.
We are quite pleased the previous homeowner placed paneling over natural cedar logs in two bedrooms and painted it a light color. I would suggest not to hesitate to your paint paneling for a room brightening update. Our paneling grooves are not filled and I feel its a huge improvement.
I think you’ll be really pleased with your results.
Best wishes in your paneling refurb adventure!
