A four inch stud would be really heavy for a tray.
Sorry I really read that wrong, but I guess even if you made a tray out of say 6 of these spaced 1/2 inch apart and with a lip of one inch all around and 18 inches long and put two drawer pulls for handles, what would make that farmhouse?
A 1 x 4 seems like a little over kill.
