If you have snakes, you also have a food source for them. Mice or rats, mostly. Getting rid of them is your best bet. Whatever you do, don't use lime. When it gets wet it is caustic and can burn people or pets, plus it really doesn't deter the snakes, anyway.
I, personally, find snakes to be a benefit, though I do understand some have a fear of them. I just move the copperheads to the woods across the street, but leave all black snakes alone. They don't attack people unless they are attacked. Just watch for them and go around, no problem.
Now if you have them in the house, that's another story. Seal up any and all ways they can get in and take care of the food source.
