How to Remove Popcorn Ceilings
Marcy, we wet and scraped ours off, then painted. It was not perfectly smooth but it looked like it was patterned that way on purpose! We covered all our furniture with sheets and paint tarps. Then our neighbors did his and duct taped a shop wet/dry vacuum to the scraper and he had a much easier job of cleaning up! It isn't hard to do, it just takes a lot of elbow grease so to speak.
Either scrape it, or drywall over it. I've also seen people ship-lap or use some kind of paneling over it.
If you don't want to scrape the popcorn, you can plank over the ceiling!
