any space that is used creatively will get messy. Make sure you use all the space available. Look carefully at the garage as a whole. Is all storage neat and organized? The more you can carve out for your craft projects the better. Go through things and discard anything not needed. Use plastic boxes for storage. Build shelves. Use good light. Have a good sized work table. PIck up, put away.
No matter what you do, it will continue to get messy unless you organize and put stuff away. Emily had good ideas.
Great advice from Emily. I’d just like to add that you might want to make the area by a window. This is so you can install a small window air conditioner for the summer if your garage isn’t climate controlled. You can also consider framing it in with some very basic, cheap framing covered with paneling on the outside walls. You could use room dividers or temporary walls like the ones used in an office. These walls will serve a dual purpose; control the area so you’re not heating and cooling the entire garage, and it controls the size of the space so no one encroaches on your space.
Hello. I like to use bins and plastic drawer bins to contain my supplies. I also have a repurposed kitchen craft cabinet. My desktop surface is always messy with multiple projects underway.
You need a dedicated flat surface to work on, no matter your craft. A hollow core door is a terrific surface and you can get one at Habitat's store for about $30. Attach it to a wall where there is at least one outlet, making sure it's level. You can purchase legs, cut wood, whatever works.
You need excellent lighting, a comfortable chair, and places nearby to store all the "tools" you regularly use. If you don't have much money to spend, you can start by getting a plastic tower of drawers that you put under your work surface.
Larger items can be put in covered plastic storage bins with labels/pictures of the contents large enough to easily read.
Somehow you have to designate precisely where your work area is. Anything from walls to a room size area rug edged with neon duct tape, again whatever works! 😎
Try using pegboard to organize your crafts. Use S hooks to hold tools, You can also hang baskets and bins. Use paper towel holders to hold ribbons.
