I only use a homemade wreath on my front door, but I also have a front porch and I decorate that too. Years ago I started switching to more of a "winter" theme so that it can stay up all winter and not just for the holiday season.
The easiest way is to just hang a wreath, but you can also cover with heavy duty paper and make your front door look like a present. I have a Santa that I hang on my door. I made him with Dollar Store craft objects.
While you could go nuts on the decor sometimes simplicity is the best. What about a beautiful gold wreath to welcome people to your home. A light colored wreath against of dark door or a light colored wreath against a dark door. You don't want so much decor that it draws attention away from the decorations.

Martha....Use garland around the outside and a wreath on the door.
My daughter's front door always looks so welcoming at Christmas. She combines green faux garland with some live greens, (evergreen or whatever she can find foraging through the city park). She strings clear twinkle lights through the garland and hangs it above her front door, the sides falling about 1/3 down either side of the door. She buys extra wide red indoor/outdoor velvet ribbon and asks the floral department person at Michaels to tie a big simple bow. They charge her $10.00 to make the bow. She places the bow on top of the garland at the top of her door. It's simple, inexpensive and so beautiful!

Look at the top of this page at the left under Search my next DIY project for door. Most people add a simple wreath.
