Hi Brenda, if you have a large area to clean, you may be well off to rent a carpet cleaner. They do a good job, I usually do a room twice. Once in one direction, the next time in the other direction.
And they usually come with a smaller attachment for doing stairs
Here's some good tips Brenda

At most home improvement stores, you can rent a steam cleaner, which is great for deep cleaning. They'll come with instructions and you may have to buy some cleaner to go with them, but they'll do any really heavy duty cleaning that you need to do.
I have a multipurpose steamer and it works so well. It doesn’t make the floors too wet...which is key. I don’t love the idea of mold growing under my carpet!
I bought my own steam cleaner. I start with a hot water rinse and suction first to get the most of the dirt out before I use the water soap combination. Don't over soap because it will take forever to rinse. If you don't get all the soap out of the carpet the dried soap residue will attract more dirt once it's dry.
