Goo gone smell in a baby's sweater. Cannot wash.
Do you use dryer sheets Dav? Some people do, some don't. It does help with the smells. Sometimes if your towels are getting older they do take on a odor that doesn't seem to go away. You can rewash a load with no laundry soap and use a few cups of vinegar instead. That will also take out any smells and any excess laundry soup that hasn't rinsed out over time.
If they smell damp, then they still might be not fully dried. Using vinegar instead of fabric softener in the wash and felted wool balls in the dryer will remedy the musty odor.
Use Borax with your detergent. Add about 1/2 cup for a washer load. No fabric softener. Set the washer on hot, use a soak & wash cycle. After the first wash & dry, you don't need to do the preliminary soak, unless a towel has been sitting around damp for a while.
Hi! If you add a drop of lavender essential oil to one of the towels and retry and it take the damp smell away!
I do a final rinse of just washed laundry with about 1/2 cup white vinegar, then line dry if at all possible. If the weather is bad, dry in the dryer as usual, be sure they are completely dry.
One thing I have learned from experience with a front loading washer is to check where the water exits, dry that area when done for the day with laundry. The mold and debris build up will cause you major smelly problems. So, I dry the area and leave the door open as well as the chute where you put the detergent , etc in.
Best to you.
I just add a cup of vinegar to the washer and wash as normal. I would try putting vinegar in your fabric softener dispensor instead of the softener. I always do that with my towels because softener keeps your towels from being absorbent. The vinegar will get rid of the odor plus, it will cut through the previous uses of fabric softener and they will become absorbant again. if the odor is really bad, i would also add some to the wash cycle.
It could be your washing machine that is causing the problem. You need to run the clean cycle on the machine either with bleach or vinegar on very HOT water. Turn up the water heater to get the hottest water available. Also clean out the lint trap on the washer and the dryer.
When washing towels, make sure you get all the soap out. Use white vinegar instead of fabric softener.
I take all the towels and wash them and add a 1/4 cup of bleach to the load and it freshions them and disenfects them
Try the color safe bleach.
Wash with 1/4 cup vinegar only and you may need to repeat 2-3 times. Then dry thoroughly. Hope this helps! Hugs, Holly
