Hi Allan, the asiest way I've found to clean an oven is to pour ammonia into a glass bowl, place it in the dirty oven overnight or for several hours. DO NOT turn on the oven. Just let the ammonia work and then take a hot soapy cloth and scrub the grease and grime away. This method works well for the grates of a bbq grill....just place the ammonia in a heavy-duty plastic bag, insert the grates and lay all of it on a flat surface. Several hours later the grates can be scrubbed a bit and rinsed and are grime free. Just be careful with the ammonia as it is very caustic. Rinse everything very well.

HOW TO CLEAN YOUR OVEN WITH BAKING SODA & VINEGAR!
I have a steam clean oven, which is great for light cleaning, but for heavier grime, I use Easy Off cold oven No Fume. Works great.
I agree with Janice, ammonia to the rescue1
I do my burner grates 2 at a time because we need at at least 2 for family cooking functions. Put each in a freezer bag with 1/2 cup ammonia outside, the fumes do the work overnight, remove and rinse well wearing gloves and a face protector. Then do the remaining 2.
It works well in the oven as well, good ventilation is the key.
Sprinkle baking soda and spray with water. Let that sit for a half hour and wipe clean. It works miracles on burned on gunk!

More frequently? Easy off works if you do it 3 of 4 times annually.
