There are many chemical remedies you can spray on the lawn, but I do not use them as I have pets and small children and want to keep things organic. I use white vinegar and dig out, but my lawns are not that big. I also planted white clover which is drought tolerant, soft and fluffy under foot and chokes out many weeds.

Here's a receipt for a weed killer:
2 cups white vinegar
¼ cup salt
Squirt of dawn
Mix in a spray bottle. If you have a larger area, you can mix in a garden sprayer with larger quantities. Use when it will not be raining for a few hours so that it isn’t washed away.
Be careful, it will kill things around it so you might consider applying with an eye dropper.

I use Spectracide Weed and Feed in the hose end sprayer. No mixing, no mess. Kills the weeds and feeds the lawn. A thicker lawn leaves no room for weeds.
