What is the best way to paint pressboard paneling?
What’s the best way to paint paneling, it’s not real wood it’s like a pressed board type with a shinny surface. Towards the bottom I have spots that are ruined and it’s raised and the top coat is off, can I try to lightly sand it to kinda smooth it so it won’t be so noticeable also?

Sheri: Sure! sand those raised spots (I suggest a small power sander.). The PRIME! and put on two coats of a good latex paint. ...it should look lovely! Great idea!
Hi Sheri, here's what we did with our wood panelled rooms and it looks great. I agree with Nan. Do a little sanding on those raised spots.
Hi ! Yes , sand the raised areas with a sanding sponge . Then if the paneling is still pretty shiny you should use a primer first , before painting . We had the ugliest paneling in the house we bought a few years ago . It was white and green !!! Ugh !
It had only a little sheen , it was 40 years old . We just painted it with out the primer. We used a light gray color and only did 1 coat and it looked great , what a difference !!!!! We took out the old discolored shades and put up white
mini blinds , totally different looking , now it looks bright & fresh ! Good luck !
Make sure the paneling is clean and dry. Prime with a good stain blocking primer like Kilz. Then paint like painting regular walls. Acrilyc latex paint will work. If the paneling has grooves you can fill them with non shrink drywall patching compound. Just put on enough to fill the grooves. Let it dry overnight. Next day use a damp sponge to smooth the patch. Then prime and paint.

Yes run your hand over the paneling and when you feel something sand it llightly.after your done paint the paneling it might need two coats .
Sheri...Yes you have the right idea..lightly sand other parts and use primer then paint or purchase primer with paint. Good luck
Depends if it's laminate or not. If it's laminate, you can try this method: https://bachelorettepadflip.com/2016/08/14/painting-laminate/
If you can, take a sample of it to the paint department at your home improvement store and ask for their advice. They have products you may not have considered. If you can't bring that then take several good photos instead.
I would use a high grit sandpaper, like 400 and sand down the rough spots. I have used latex paint on mine where I got water spots from a leak. I actually painted the water spots with a microfiber cloth wrapped around my finger to blend into the paneling.
