Hi Marquentia, there are some great upholstery cleaners out there now that have scrub brushes on the end of them. They make it super easy to clean the car seats. You should be able to find them at your local home improvement or auto store. (I am in Canada and they have them at Canadian Tire)
Yes, A little Bissell machine works great for spot removal on carpets and upholstery. Just spray carpet cleaner and suck up the liquid. I love this and is small enough to use in a car!
Steam , especially if It's really gross. It's better to force the grime downward instead of pulling it up and up , it never gets out of the topmost surface. Push it down into the seats with steam, and maybe a good antigerm liquid. And dry them good, just like new, and no smell!

Get some spray on cleaner spray on scrub with a brush or cloth let dry then vacuumed
