You could use an exterior Urethane. You want to make sure you get the waterproof version.
Hi Nancy. Hope this information helps you get your furniture piece waterproof.
To waterproof wood, start by sanding it with fine grit sandpaper to remove any imperfections and prep the surface. Then, use a rag to apply an even coat of linseed oil, walnut oil, or tung oil to the wood and let it cure for 24 hours. Repeat the process 2 more times so there are 3 coats of oil on the wood.Dec 3, 2019

Helmsman Marine Spar Urethane. Used on wood surfaces on boats.
You can use a finish called spar urathane which is outdoor safe!
All of these are great answers, but I would still keep it “under wraps” when not using it. Just like the BBQ grill.
its not redwood, nor teak nor treated lumber.
I would use marine-grade wood sealer.
Spar varnish works on all wood. The BBQ grill I would just buy a cover.
If your piece has woodgrain then put a couple coats of MARINE VARNISH on it. Painting: Gently sand, put on a good primer, Zinsser Bullseye 1 2 3 primer and the paint with your exterior latex, at least two coats.
I would use marine paint and spar varnish, both used in boats. Rustoleum makes 1 quart sized cans you can get at True Value. That said, if its fully exposed to the elements, you will have to touch it up at least once a year.
