Hi Dubers, you can spray it with anti scratch/bitters no chew spray that usually does it but you will need to reapply it once a week. Besides that the only thing I've found that works is literally just covering it up. You can purchase little "caps" for their claws but they fall off eventually and not all cats will tolerate them.
By teaching my cats to use their scratching post instead on my furniture. I do that by providing them with their own scratching posts that I sprinkle cat nip on. Also use a water squirt bottle to help drive home the message that furniture is a no no for sharpening claws on.
Tin foil - cats hate it!
Double sided tape or aluminum foil, kitties hate these. If you catch them, take them to a vertical scratching post, you may have to experiment on the texture they like.
Hey Dubers, hope this link helps you out!

You can buy a spray called behave spray which will repel cats from the couch.
You could buy bards that you put on the sides to protect it but you need to stop the behavior use a spray bottle with water when he tries to go ne’er the couch spray him and keep doing it he will stop he will remember every time he goes ne’er the couch he will get sprayed he will stop.
I used clear contact paper and some large quilting pins on the corners of my sofa to break my cat of the habit..... and they eventually just started using the scratching post I had purchased for them.
We have cats and they love to scratch. aluminum foil will help, but I have found putting something next to where they like to scratch (like a table) helps. We have scratching posts and I sprinkle cat nip on them, they love it. Good luck with your fur babies.

I think the best thing to do is offer an alternative option to the cat like a nice cardboard scratching pad with some catnip on it. You can get these on Amazon or at a local store. Try covering the couch with a blanket or something in the meantime, while your cat gets used to its new scratching spot. Hope this helps!
I purchased soft cotton woven throw rugs in the same color as my couch and draped them over the front of the arms they scratched. They need something to scratch on. I had my neighbor that cuts trees cut a slice of a tree out level on top and bottom about 18" across and about 20" tall. You want it heavy enough they can NEVER topple it over. I took the lid of an old wooden shaker box and sat the tree sub in it. The cats loved it and left the couch alone. It has to be tall enough to let them stretch upward to scratch. In time they removed all of the bark and just continued to scratch the wood. Weekly I swept the pieces up in the lid. You could use any kind of tray. To attract them in the beginning sprinkle a little bit of catnip on itand let if fall into the crevices of the bark.
