It is accomplished by a series of knots in the rope. First decide what you would like to make and then you can find directions online. I used to make plant hangers as gifts for people, 1 or 2 a day in the summer when I was out of school & not working. I found it to be very fun.
Hi! That's a craft I want to learn, too. I've been watching videos to learn a few of the knots, including this one:

My mother taught me when I was little (in the 80's) and it wasn't in style anymore...haha. I am so happy she did though because it is everywhere now and I love it. If I could do it when I was young, anyone can do it. I would make bracelets and necklaces which I think are a little harder than the big rope knots. Anyway, I found a video for you to learn the basics.

The intro is long but it shows how to start right from the beginning to tie onto a piece of wood. Good luck!
