It basically makes a light stain to age the wood.
Wow thank you very much
Vinegar can get the shiny surface off a finish, the steel wool acts like a super find sanding paper. I use it a lot, the steel wool, to get the imperfections off a finish.
I did this by accident once. LOL. I was trying to sand the piece of furniture and use steel wool but was having a hard time removing the layers of stain since it seeps into the wood. I came up with the bright idea of using vinegar to see if I could soak that into the wood and remove the stubborn layers of stain....but unfortunately I was dipping the steel wool with the vinegar. OMG......adding to my frustration in trying to remove all stain and bring it back to the original raw wood, I was staining it darker! It definitely gives more of a weathered look...which is very popular right now. However, at the time.....the dark grey weathered look was not in. HAHA. I have never forgotten what vinegar and steel wool does to wood!! The longer the steel wool soaks in the vinegar, the darker the stain will become. Good luck!

I use a steel wool pad, an old SOS pad works best. Pour white vinegar in a jar and drop in the steel wool pad. Wait a few hours and paint it on the raw wood. https://www.homeroad.net/2012/02/antiqued-clothespins.html
