I hope this is as an abundance of caution rather than having an infected family member. If you have an infected loved one, please know that you are in the prayers of my family and thousands more like us.
As has been mentioned, homemade masks do not offer the same protection as medical grade masks. And getting children (or even many adults) to comply with PPE protocols can be very hard. Keeping children home in an infection-free house is safer than taking them out with a mask of any type.
Unfortunately, life often conspires against us. If your home is not infection-free or there is no alternative but to take your children away from home, then by all means make the best protection you can for them.
In addition to the templates already suggested, consider no-sew options.
If you have access to pantyhose (or tights) and washcloths, you can cut lengths of pantyhose leg large or small enough to fit around your child's head (length should match bridge of nose to under chin). Then place a folded washcloth or two over the mouth & nose; hold that in place with the nylon.
You can even crop an old t-shirt. Have the child wear it upside down (neck still on neck, chest over the nose) & safety pin the excess in back of the head. The trimmings can be folded & used for extra layers in front of the face.
Obviously, if your child is so young that they may choke on extra layers of fabric, omit those. If your child doesn't understand how Personal Protective Equipment works, or cannot be trusted not to touch or remove items randomly, then giving them PPE is just another potential source of germs.
Use your best judgement & stay safe
