If it is rock, stone or brick it can be painted or even white washed (ideas below) if it is tile or some other product you can cover it with recycled wood, ship lap, or fake stone.

Do you have a picture of your fireplace?
Lots of options, but without a photo we would be shooting in the dark.
Depending on what you want to do, the easiest thing would be to paint/white wash it.
