Update 90’s Bombay chest.
I need some ideas to update this dated chest. I would like to do something other than just paint it. Any style is fine with me since I’m trying to update our decor. Maybe farmhouse or rustic industrial. I’d appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

Add rope handles to the sides. Paint it cream and get a cool stencil from Amazon that you put on in black. There are thousands to choose from. Stencil a cool advertising sign on top. Add a lock to the front from an old suitcase.
Rustic industrial makes me think you may want to spray paint the base in Rustoleum bronze for a darker look. After that yes paint is the option for the chest but maybe cleaning it up and putting on a new coat of sealant would really make that wood pop. After that I've found vinyl wall decals/stickers are cheap and MUCH easier to get perfect than stencils :)
You could add an overlay after painting: https://www.myoverlays.com/
You could try stamping or stenciling a design into each of the quadrants of the existing design to add more interest.
Since you don't want to paint it. Add rope handles on the sides. Stencil or paint a pattern in each triangle in white for a farmhouse look. Lightly sand the pattern. Metallic pattern for an industrial look.
Though you may not think of upholstery when you consider the options for wood furniture, upholstered dressers and chests look stunning. You can upholster just the top and sides, the drawer fronts, or the entire piece.
To trim your piece after you upholster it, you can use gimp or braid for an opulent, romantic look. Or, opt for nail head trim—single nail heads or easy-to-attach strips—to give the piece a sleek, sophisticated look.
I would start by painting the metal base a new color and see if that's enough. If not, and you don't want to use paint, sand the wood and stain it with a new color.
fabric would be nice on this piece and you could paint the legs to match whatever fabrics or upholstery you decide to use
I would paint the top one color and the base another. You could also add wood appliques.
You could keep the existing design (with the triangles) and use them as your guide when painting. Eg, you could follow the design and use black and white.
Maybe something like this: https://pin.it/6ti0fxT
This gives an idea of other colors you could use.
I would keep existing design maybe just change a colors that will go with the rest of the house decor
