Without a picture, I'm guessing a canvas may help.
Try an outdoor roller shade. You can keep it up when not using and let down for shade or privacy. Lots of places sell them. You can Google exterior roller shades to look at your options and where to buy. Good luck.
Without seeing what you have in place, I would say a roll up awning. If the problem is in the house, I would suggest a darkening curtain that would block the sun. We bought our curtain at Walmart.
Maybe a shade sail. Here's one website but there's more if you do some exploring!

Hi Blanche. I recommend using a shade sail. I have never used one but I'm sure it would block that afternoon sun for you. Good luck Blanche. Stay healthy and well.
Hello Blanche,
Could you use a bed sheet fixed to the inside of your door and tied to the rails of balcony?
A bed sheet is going to flap so much in the wind it will drive you crazy, if it doesn't fly away like a magic carpet beforehand.
If you are renting the apartment or condo, it is unlikely you will be permitted to drill any holes into the exterior part of the balcony in attempt to mount any supporting hardware that will be required to adequately anchor a shade sail, awning, or outdoor blind.
My suggestion is to purchase lined insulating curtains and mount them over your existing indoor window coverings. Keep them closed during the times of the day when the west sun is hottest.
