I have wood curtain rods. I decided to go with wood because it is very easy to add to the length with doweling and then caulk and paint to match the rest of the rod.
I did find that since my windows were over 6 feet wide I needed to add support in the middle of the rod (no problem that is where the curtains meet).
PVC if it is tends to bend under much weight or heat. But if you are spanning a smaller distance and the curtains are light weight it is a very inexpensive choice. And it can be painted any color you wish.
I do have metal rods in my bedroom. No for any particular reason other then I found them at the Salvation Army so they were cheap. When I got them home took some sand paper to smooth them down and then spray painted.
But the latest ones I got were from Lowes. They are 6 feet in length and were less then $3 each. I should add they are metal. The cheap kind but I don't care they are out on the patio.

You can make your own with conduit. https://www.houseofhepworths.com/2011/10/11/how-to-make-a-cheap-awesome-professional-curtain-rod/
I have done that in 3 bedrooms. Also Ikea has some nice rods very reasonable
For really heavy curtains I've use black galvanized pipe and been really happy with it!
Love this idea! how to make curtain rods out of pvc pipe
I use 3/4" or 1" electrical conduit. Comes in ten foot lengths. Can be cut to length, painted, and strong enough to carry any weight curtains.
I agree with William the metal conduit is economical and found in big box hardware. Lots of options with spray paint. We spent far too much on pottery barn rings and rods!
Hi Ceci, it's all personal choice. Here are some links to help you out.
