What can one do to use antique andirons for a different purpose?
We no longer have a fireplace and these antique andirons were made by my Grandfather. They are owls with glass eyes.
I would clean it up and use it for succulents or small plants.
That would be amazing in a craft room! I like the above answer too, it would be lovely filled with plants!
I can see this as a shoe storage in a closet or even a mud room. They sell similar items, probably not made from wood and just simply from plastic at the container store for big bucks! This is what I woild use it for definitely!
It would make a wonderful display cabinet for small collectibles, but I would use it in my craft room for storage.

I would paint it and use it for crafts, as a planter, or for storage. It looks to be pretty large so you could use it in your garage or basement for tools, screws and nails, etc.
Wine rack?
Yup. First thing that I saw was a wine rack.
Hmmm, I'm thinking a spice rack, openings may be too small to hold wine bottles. How about a condo for birds?
I think it would be great in a crafting room, in a bedroom for shoes or clothes, or you could use it for some candles or other scented items! I like the bird thing above me too. But we all know that you are going to need to clean it up, and maybe even give it a new coat of paint.
My Dad built several of these cubbies in various sizes when he worked on a farm and in his own sheds for tools and supplies such as nails, screws machinery bolts & nuts, etc. and even smaller power tools. Worked great and held a lot of stuff. He even used the same basic idea to make nesting boxes for the hen house, a half dozen or so larger boxes gave our hens plenty of nests.
I agree, it would work great for many crafting supplies and tools if you don't need it for it's current purpose.
Thanks for the memory of dear Dad!
I would still use for small items but crafts instead of carpentry.
I think it would look great in my house! :-)
Since it is so big, I would use it for craft items. If you have space or a garage, use it for nails, screws, garden tools etc. Or use as a shoe rack in a closet. I would clean it up and spray paint it a great color.
Turn the idea for a concept upside down, literally.
Clean up the piece while leaving the character and it’s ‘patina’ - whitewash, add a hint of vintage looking paint, or leave the wood to speak for itself. Then, create access from behind the unit through to a variety of the individual ‘boxed’ units/compartment spaces. Run cords of adjustable length bare bulb light fixtures through these openings to hang from various heights in a decorative arrangement - enough bare bulb fixtures relative to the size of the storage piece itself, to create a well balanced though not necessarily geometric designed rustic yet modern, bare bulked hanging pendant light fixture piece. The bulbs could either be all the same or a variety of the new vintage Edison round bulbs, long tubes or modern - whatever the space speaks of. Add some recessed, hidden LED bulbs near various edge compartments and centers for added lighting and an additional dimmable or focused recessed lighting look. Hang the newly crafted multi light open bulb pendant fixture - the back of the storage piece towards the ceiling and open compartments with lights hanging down obviously, using either industrial pipe, vintage rope, or chain or the like. Sit back with bourbon and friends and enjoy good company with a great conversation piece.
Cheers!
J.
Re: Lauren's comment above:
How deep is the unit?
It doesn't look deep enough to adequately fit shoes, nor do the individual cubbies look wide enough for shoes........
If you had enough space and liked cooking I would use it as a huge spice rack or open shelving in my farmhouse kitchen.
Could you use it for shoes in a mudroom or bedroom?
What about using it for storing delicate christmas decorations? Put tissue paper in each square to protect contents, cover the top with fabric such as stiff vinyl, or piece of plywood, then store flat under a bed.
I am loving all of these wonderful ideas. Hopefully, this weekend, I will measure the inside of the individual cubbies and then get back to you. Thanks for all your suggestions. Maureen
The depth of each cubbie is 8 inches and the is inches
oops, the width is 6 inches
