How do I deep clean a wood table?

I recently purchased an antique wood table that was clearly around for a long time. Every time I wipe the table down it's sticky. It has a stubborn layer of 'age' that is really grossing me out.
I need all of your tips, tricks and any tried and true methods to remove the grime that comes with age. :)
Wash down with mineral spirits to see if that cuts it. I use an old Terry cloth rag or towel. Depending on build up may take several attempts. It will not harm the finish. I sell antiques and that usually works great. Once clean you can use Old English dark tone to bring it back to life.

I would use vinegar and olive oil to get rid of all the gunk. I would dust it before I apply vinegar and olive oil mixed mixture. Hope it helps!

My Mother in law had this problem. I told her to pour neat washing up liquid onto the table an use a soft nai; brush or toothbrush to work it all over the top with a little water to remove the build up of furniture polish. Then sponge it off and wipe over with clear water. Repeat until build up is gone and you end up with original finish. It worked well and she stopped polishing ............
We have this problem on our old oak kitchen cabinets. I clean them with Krud Cutter(the spray specifically for kitchen cabinets). It works well....I would definitely try that to get rid of the coating. If that doesn't work, I would refinish the table.

Make a baking soda and peroxide paste and scrub. GP66 or other safe degreaser and a plastic scraper might be the best way to go since it's so sticky.
I use Murphy's oil soap and scrub with abrasive side of scrubby. Then I use Old English scratch cover and then a good oil based wood wax. It doesn't shine bright for several buffings. Then it is sealed for a year. I also did this on the church pews.
