Soak them in water?
Use them once and they will look old unless they are cleaned well.
You can apply some stain (blotched on) or paint onto the handles to make them look used. Some type of acid or sandpaper can damage the coating on the metal. Set then in water and then in the sun to get rust started.
Rubicon: use them!
Here are a few ways to age the handle. https://www.hometalk.com/16567197/turn-new-wood-into-aged-wood
lay them outside and let them rust and get old looking
Splatter some paint and stain on them. Use them to do some scrubbing and wear down the bristles.

Let a professional painter borrow them for a month- or just ask a painter for their old used ones that are not useful anymore.
Do you remember anything about the post you saw? I just did a search on the internet and also on Pinterest for “repurposed used paintbrushes “ and got many suggestions, perhaps you’ll recognize one, or find something even better🤩
Thanks I tried also and could not find it I should have paid more attention I’m thinking they were displayed in a paint can similar to wooden kitchen spoons in a crock ??? I have bunches of ugly brushes to use for this
Hmmm, I thought I saw something like that in my search, but not sure where, try wording your search in a few different ways, you’ll get different results. “Crafts for used paintbrushes,” “repurposed used paintbrushes”, etc
thanks ...tried and no luck......
Maybe try putting them in water
