You can hang it on the exterior, you might want to paint it.

I put mine in the garden to block weeds. You can put some mulch over it to hide it.
Karen, I'm having the same problem with my front rubber door mat. The decorative colors have worn off with virtually no traffic on it in less than a year. I have scrapped off the remaining paint (?).with a wire brush. It is now all black and like you wondering what to do next.
Can you show what kind of mat it is
