We have a mobile home with paneling and laminate cabinets...do not want to replace, just paint.
when we moved in our paneling had been laid sideways with paper on the top half of the wall...I sanded it lightly wiped off the dust and primed before painting
Hi Jeannie I would first just make sure its really clean and then after that just prime and paint like a normal wall.
I would clean it well, use a stand alone primer (not a paint and primer together), and then regular wall paint in any color you choose!
Clean it with TSP solution, and then decide if you were going to try to fill in the spaces between the panels. That’s a huge amount of work, and my experience has been drywall mud works well. That’s two extra steps, including sanding and re-cleaning.
Proper prep can yield a successful job. After walls are clean —prime and paint.
We have a log cabin and too much wood is dark and dreary.
We are quite pleased the previous homeowner placed paneling in two bedrooms and painted it a light color. I would suggest not to hesitare to your paint paneling for a room brightening update. Our paneling grooves are not filled and I feel its a huge improvement.
I think you’ll be really pleased with your results. Best wishes in your painting adventure!

Clean the paneling with a cleaner degreaser. then use a bonding, stain hiding primer. Use a good acrylic paint and use a roller or sprayer. I did my paneling several years ago, and it still looks fantastic.

When we've painted paneling, a good cleaning comes first. Then, because I didn't like the grooves, I filled them with spackle. If you go over them with a damp sponge, you will save yourself some sanding and dust. Be sure to use seal with a product like Kilz before painting. The paint counter at most stores like Lowe's or Home Depot or a hardware store with a good paint department can tint the Kilz to the color you are painting, which helps save the amount of paint you end up having to apply. The last one I did, we did a soft off white creamy color called linen. You would have never known how it started out, dark with black grooves, and nail holes, which I patched. It was fresh and clean after a bit of work. Good luck and stay safe!
Painting paneling makes a huge difference in the feel of a room. Just be sure the paneling is clean, use a primer, and then paint. Some people even fill in the vertical indentions but they actually add some interest if you keep them. Your choice! You can paint with a roller.

Hello,
If this is indoor, use a brush for the groves and a roller for the rest. or use Paint Runner Pro" for the whole job!
Clean with tsp, prime, then 2 coats of paint. I would recommend Bullseye 1-2-3 primer. I did it 25 years ago. Except where my daughter's bed hit the wall when she would "flop" onto it, it still looks perfect.
