How do I drain my hole?
I have a hole, in the middle of the ground, in my backyard, filled with good top soil, about 1.5 feet deep. It has lots of tomato plants in it, but every time it rains all the water ends up at the top and I need to drain it by shoveling it out. How do I drain it without shoveling out the water?

Drainage Issues? Check Out This Yard
Could you add gravel in small trenches? That would allow the water to drain on its own.
It might mean digging up your yard and raking that dirt to slope downwards away from everything so it doesn't pool and create damage. You can re-grade your yard using a bobcat in worst cases. first check all gutters to make sure water isn't coming off the roof and pooling in different areas that could pool up. If it is definitely the yard scaping, look at your yard and figure out the best placement for adding some drainage perforated pipes so that the water has some assistence flowing away from the area. This might be the type of drain pipe that you will need to insert into the dirt around the house or areas you are getting too much water:

Do you have heavy clay soil? Is the top soil very compacted? If so, you'll need some soil amendments to improve drainage, such as compost (in large quantity), perlite, and perhaps some lime, dependent upon your soil's pH level. These items will need seriously mixed with and deeply dug (minimum 18" in my area) into your existing soil.
As mentioned above, ground slope is very important. You want no potential for pools of water to accumulate.
Perhaps some soil testing and some advice from a local master gardener/county extension agent/local university is in order.

I put in what I ended up calling a "poor man's french drain" all the way across my back yard. I dug a three foot deep trench and filled it with broken bricks and rocks that had been left on the property by the previous owner. I covered it back up with the sod I had dug out - after just a couple of days you couldn't even tell that it was there! And it worked like a charm!
