How to Create a Halloween & Thanksgiving Banner...in One!
Holiday decor can sometimes be tough to invest in. You spend a good amount of time working on a beautiful piece for it to be on display for often less than one month. While racking my brain and searching my craft supplies (and our shop), I came across this set of 5 wooden pendants and realized I could create a Halloween banner on one side and a Thanksgiving banner on the other!
Here is what I used for this project:
- Wood banner
- Five (5) Elsie wood flowers
- Paint brushes
- Acrylic paint
- Twine
I painted the candy corn stripes, one color at a time making sure the paint was dry before using the next color. This way, you don't mix the paint colors and get a cleaner line like you find on the actual candy!
The paint colors I used:
Yellow - FolkArt Daffodil Yellow
Orange - Apple Barrel Harvest Orange
White - Anita's White
After each wooden pendant has a candy corn side (and it has fully dried), you are ready to flip them over and make your pumpkin pie slices!
The pumpkin pie is a little bit trickier because of the "crust" section but I will show you a quick tip on shading to help you get the right effect.
First, paint the majority of your pendant an orangey brown leaving just a little unpainted at the widest part. Then paint a dark brown in a scalloping shape on that edge. This will act as a shadow and help create depth. The last step is to use a lighter brown and paint over the dark brown. Be sure to leave a little edge of the darker brown paint though!
The paint colors I used:
Pie filling - Craft Smart Orange Spice mixed with a little Anita's Warm Brown
Crust shadow - Anita's Dark Brown
Crust top layer - Anita's Warm Brown mixed 50/50 with Anita's Vanilla Cream
Every slice of pumpkin pie needs a dollop of whipped cream and this Elsie wood flower is the perfect shape for our banner! Just dab a little hot glue on the back of the flower and glue directly onto the wood surface.
There are 2 holes already cut on the wooden pendants so to connect them into a banner/garland, I wove twine through the holes. Since twine isn't very smooth, the pendants stay in place!
Now you are ready to use this fun candy corn piece as Halloween decor...
...and on November 1st, all you need to do is switch the banner to the other side and you are all set for Thanksgiving!!
