Super Simple Fabric Gift Bags

There are a lot of different ways to sew reusable gift bags, but this one is my favorite because it's so easy and requires very basic sewing skills. The trick is using non-fraying fabric. (If you're not sure if your fabric frays, ask in a fabric shop.)
Materials:
  • two rectangles of non-fraying fabric about  25 x 30 cm for a smallish bag.
  • coordinating ribbon for the drawstring
  • ribbon or ric rac to decorate the outside of the bag
  • sharp fabric scissors
Sew decorative ribbon on the outsides of the pieces so that they will match up when sewn together.
Sew along the sides and bottom with a 1 cm seam allowance. (Look here at the bag on the right, not the one on the left.)
Cut the top of the bag with a zig zag shape. (optional)
Fold the top of the bag over and make small cuts into the fabric.
Slip a ribbon through the slits to form a drawstring.
Fill the bag with a gift and tie a bow in the drawstring. So pretty and so quick to wrap presents! There are lots of options with this project. You can hem the top of the fabric, sew the drawstring without cutting slits in the fabric, or sew boxed corners to make the bag stand up better. Read this tutorial to find out more about these options and to get all the details! If you love wrapping gifts with respect for the environment, check out my other tutorials in my ecological gift wrapping series!

Do you ask for the wrapping back to read-use or hope that the recipient doesn’t throw it away and uses it again?
