Repairing cement driveway
I have a concrete/cement driveway that's cracking away from where it meets the sidewalk. Can this be repaired without using a professional?

Basically where the driveway meets with the sidewalk is considered an expansion joint. It prevents the drive or walk to crack uncontrollably.

This can be repaired yourself. I would go to home depot and see what they have in the way of concrete repair material. Prep work on the damaged area is critical. You may nned to rent a hammer drill and rough up the area to be repaired. You may want to drill into existing concrete and grout in some small re bar for reinforcing. And I would us a bonding agent to help the bonding of patch material. Good luck
Hello. I hope you can find some good advice here.
Checking out the Q&A and reviews on some products might be something to consider with recommendations you receive.
I’ve been completely dissatisfied with the handful of quikcrete repair products that I have tried to repair my hairline and other cracks in my five-year-old concrete driveway.
Definarely do not use the $20 epoxy tube -it dries yellow! Such an inflamatory appearance calling more attention to the defect.

Hello I also don’t know your geographical area —-in our situation the concrete walkway extension towards our front door that connects to the driveway does elevate - rise- during the cold weather periods. It goes back down and resettles by spring time. It is not addressed as it self corrects.
Still watching for the concrete driveway repair methods offered here.
As I said in the above post all my purchased products that I’ve used have been complete failures with dissatisfied results.
So far it doesn’t seem like anybody has offered you a suggestion or reply with actual user experience using a product that preforms and corrects the situation well.

Check out a product called sika. I’ve seen it demonstrated for just that purpose. The other option would be patch with ready mix but you have to make sure the e siting is scored so it will adhere.
It can be repaired, but if it was recently done, I would contact the contractor that did the work to fix it to your satisfaction.
Ideally a pro would solve the reason for the the cracking then repair. It’ll keep coming back otherwise.

I can diagnose Why it cracked with a few photos. I’ve 30 years of experience in architecture & construction. We need to address Why it’s cracking and if it’s still moving.
Since I’ve no idea how bad the crack is, if it’s getting bigger, if the sidewalk is now higher or lower than the driveway-
my solutions will be based on these things.
Worst case scenario buy or borrow a 4” angle grinder and put in a diamond crusted blade ($7 at Harbor Freight) and clean out the crack and/or grind down the heaved edge.
Shop vac the crack after brushing out the big pieces. Fill with either a cementitious caulk (there are 14 different ones at Home Depot, so spend 15 minutes reading the tubes for your best choice) or fill with a concrete patching product that you’ll mix up in a big bucket and trowel on.
NONE of these products are made to cure in temperatures below 50 degrees, unless you buy one that has a special chemical that makes the concrete thermally “set” and you’ll have to put packing blankets on it for 2 days.
