Hi Frances, depending on what type of cabinets you have you may consider painting the space out in different shades of white. Removing upper cabinets and replacing them with open shelving can really give a space some breathing room. Lighting is absolutely important. Under cabinet lighting can help a lot in a small kitchen especially if the overhead lights are really harsh. If you have fluorescents overhead you might want to consider changing them out.
Another thing to think about when it comes to small dark spaces is to try to embrace the idea and go further with it. Instead of small and dark how about "cozy" - we have a regular table lamp on our kitchen counter that adds a wonderful warm glow at night.
Paint walls and cabinets light colors and then add some lighting under the cabinets to help brighten things up as well.
Must be a regional saying or terminology what is a dark pokey kitchen? Goggled that term and nothing.
Hello. I am not sure what pokey means? Paint can be an amazing upgrade to be a room brightening option. We live in a log cabin and understand how dark rooms can be. An example our previous homeowner placed simple wall paneling over the logs in the bedrooms and painted it improve the darkness situation greatly.
Hi Frances. Paint every surface white. Use white sheers on the windows. The color white will make any room brighter. Do you have any room on a wall where you could hang a mirror? Mirrors reflect light. A mirror across from a window gives the illusion of more space. I did this in my bedroom and it really works. I hope these ideas help you Frances. Good luck.
YOU COULD PURCHASE A ANEW LARGE TYPE LIGHT FOR YOUR KITCHEN,BUT SINCE i have no idea about how your kitchen really is one can only guess how many windows are in your kitchen>
