Beautiful Mersman nightstand our client requested a timeless finish for in a beautiful navy and walnut.

She really is gorgeous isn't she. My client wanted a more modern look though for this piece yet a look that wouldn't be out of place in a few years. She decided on Coastal Blue, a gorgeous navy blue from General Finishes and a walnut stained top. To make her wishes come true, we started off the makeover by cleaning and sanding. We started with Krud Kutter, rinsing it off after a scrub and letting it dry.

We then used our favorite sander ever, the 3 x 4 Electric Ray Surfprep to sand down the wood in preparation of being stained later. For the rest of the piece we used flexible sanding pads and lightly scuff sanded the piece in order to break up the existing poly finish and give the new finish something to hold on to. We used oil free tack cloths to remove any dust from sanding. Next, we used Wise Owl clear primer on the body.

We then put down a slip coat of mineral spirits in preparation for the oil based walnut stain. Then, using a foam brush we lightly brushed on the stain, making sure to immediately wipe back the excess with shop towels.

This is what it looked like after two coats, waiting a day in between and a full day after to let it dry. Then, we painted the body using Coastal Blue Milk Paint with our favorite Zibra paint brushes. We applied two coats, lightly sanding in between with 1000 grit paper.

That sheen though!! I love this paint so much, it isn't a true milk paint but is a mineral based paint that leaves a beautiful sheen when finished. This milk paint does not require a top coat but I always apply one anyhow. Since the top was oil based and the bottom was water based, we had to wait 72 hours to top coat since we were using water based High Performance Top Coat in Satin. We sprayed three coats, lightly sanding in between with 1000 grit sandpaper and removing dust again with an oil free cloth.

Here it is with a beautiful new look sure to be a classic.
