A soft, coastal, rustic vibe is what I am going for in our Master Bedroom at the Lake House. Coastal translates different ways to each person, but for me, when I think coastal, I think soft blues and grey mixed with lots of creams, whites, and woods with gorgeous light streaming everywhere. I find those colors soothing and peaceful.

I chose wood (once again) because I love the instant texture wood brings into a space. I also decided to run the boards vertically to take advantage of the 10 ft ceilings in the bedroom.

Vertical Accent Wall

This is what we used and how we did it.

6 x 12 boards (we got ours at Home Depot)- check for warping.

Paint stirrers

Paint- I used sample paints from previous projects

Cups

Rags

Pneumatic nailer/nails

Saw

I knew I wanted a "whitewashed" shabby chic feel for the wall. I found the leftover paint samples we had from various projects and the colors were perfect and a bonus they were free!

I poured small amounts of paint into cups and added water until it was the desired consistency. I experimented a lot with how heavy I wanted the color. I simply wiped it on using a rag. I kind of eyeballed this step keeping the grain in the wood showing since that was my goal. If I hand wanted a more solid coverage I would have painted. This idea of whitewash is more of a sheer coverage.

As you can see below I use A LOT of paint samples when choosing paint! ;) I even mixed a few of the colors together.

Once I had the colors I wanted and the boards were painted I left them to dry the garage. Once dry, I lined them up against the garage wall the way I wanted them on the bedroom wall.  It made it so much easier when we went to install them and allowed for me to play around with color and texture a bit before we installed them.

We used a pneumatic nailer to attach the boards directly to the wall. We tried to hit studs whenever possible. If the was no stud we used a bit of wood glue and just attached them to the drywall.

You can rent pneumatic nailers from your local Home Depot.

I ran the boards vertically to draw attention to the 11 ft ceilings.

Easy! And we love the soft pop of color. Check out the blog to see our other DIY accent walls. https://www.alifeunfolding.com

Beautiful! My husband installed a air conditioner in the wall above bed.🤔 now is no longer works & when removed, there’s going to be a Hole in my wall! It’s not appealing looking no matter what…not my decision to install it!! Aside from replacing drywall😳 I didn’t know how to cover the unsightly mess! This idea is PERFECT to cover the mess & looks beautiful! Thank you for idea!
