How to refurbish hard wood flooring that is dry and cracking?
Have a hard wood floor in bedroom that is splintering and some large pieces of the floor slats are coming apart. No water damage in the last 8 years, while we have been occupants/renters. What can be done short of pulling up present floor and installing another. We do not like carpet.

It is important to resist the idea of tearing out the splintered portion, this creates a gap you'll have to deal with.
Shop vac those areas carefully with the brush attachment.
Wood glue down the splinters.
Put “glad wrap” on the area, stack bricks or concrete blocks on it, let it dry for a week.
Fill any gouges with matching wood putty, taking care to apply it evenly.

The moisture or higher humidity might becoming from below the floor.
I used Rejuvenate on some pine wood flooring in our 1880's build farmhouse. I was amazed at the job it did. The instructions say to re apply every 6 months but it has been 2 years and mine still look great.
As for the ones that are splintering, they will need to be replaced and stained to match.
You can also sand and refinish the entire floor but that is a large job. However, results will be like new floors once repairs are completed.
here is info for you but could you not ask the landlord to replace the flooring?

Hello. Have you considered refinishing your existing floors? We had our 1970s hardwood floors refinished we had some new hw floors installed in a room addition.
I would refinish the wood in the entire room and then stain it again. Then, get a rug for the high traffic areas.

Hello,
Feed the wood! Stain, Preserve, Wax, Paint, Oil etc.
It sounds like you might need to sand the splintered areas and then stain it and reseal it. You could alway call a flooring company and as them what they may be doing, then DIY it...
You will need to refinish them.https://www.homedepot.com/c/ah/how-to-refinish-hardwood-floors/9ba683603be9fa5395fab901a1d66e5
