Yes, you can purchase the replacement material. There’s probably an edge band around the old, carefully pry that off and replace with the new in the same manner as the old. You should be able to see how it’s attached. If you need more tips, try the search bar at the top left.
I took a class years ago to learn how to cane. It depends if your chair requires pressed cane or woven cane. If the chair has holes around the edge, it’s woven. If there is a groove, then it’s pressed cane. Woven cane takes a lot of time and is detailed. It requires a good knowledge base if you want a secure seat when you are finished. If it’s pressed cane, you buy the already woven piece of cane and then put it in the groove, glue, then work side to side and front to back to secure cane, then trim, then put spline into the groove. You could probably teach yourself how to cane but it’s NOT a quick afternoon “craft” project. Or you can try to find someone and pay them to do it. Good luck
Jane, Thanks for the detailed explanation.
I grew up with my mother being a professional hand-caner and it is indeed way too tedious and laborious, not to mention hard on your hands.
Whether it is hand caned or machine woven cane, my mother always soaked it for a day to make it pliable and to let it shrink in place as it dried- making it tight as a drum.
