You could get wood patch sold in a can you put it on like putty with a knife sold at Home Depot put on flat as possible Linley sand then vRnish
If you plan to paint it you can use wood filler to patch. Some wood fillers do accept stain if you want to stain.
Can you sand down the other areas and put new veneer on

Buy a piece of the correct veneer ( You can buy Iron on pieces from craft shop. You would need to make a template of the patch required and then cut the veneer with a craft knife (making sure the grain is in the right direction) then cut it and piece it in using aa warm iron and brown paper between the \iron and Veneer! Good luck!
Is the veneer missing completely? You can purchase replacement veneer. You'd have to clean up the edges of the broken bits carefully as best you can to fit a new piece or remove the whole panel and replace that.
