Hi Cartharine one of my favorite tricks for helping keep a top loader clean was to use 1/4 cup of white vinegar instead of liquid fabric softener in every cycle. It does just as good a job keeping the static down with the added bonus of helping keep the machine clean!
The guys who delivered mine said to use 1/2 cup bleach in the clean cycle, then run a second clean cycle. I usually just wipe mine out under the lid every month (I have a list of things to do at the first of the month) and have had no issues. One machine is from 2000 and the other is from 2017.
Run three cups of white vinegar in hot water cycle. I see other say use baking soda but plain vinegar worked well in my washer.
I use white vinegar as well on hot water I do it once every 5-7 wks but if you do a lot of laundry you may need to do it monthly. I also take an old toothbrush and scrub any areas I see that needs attention with vinegar
Run an empty load with vinegar as a substitute for the detergent.
We use Afresh. You can order from Amazon. Use one tablet and run the self clean cycle.

I would buy some Afreesh. It works great,

Don't forget to remove the top of the centre agitator, clean it separately with a brush and it can then also be put in the dishwasher if you like.
Hello. I agree with the above posters- my particular washer has a clean cycle and I use the affresh tablets.
