How to add a clear, glossy, protective top coat to tile?
I have a back room off my kitchen that I'd like to use as a craft room. It has a built in counter top that was in pretty bad shape so we covered it with ceramic floor tiles. I'm happy with the results but I want to put some type of clear, glossy, protective finish over it, like a lacquer or glaze.
I think a clear shiny top coat would not only look nice, it would also seal the grout and make the surface very easy to clean. My question is, do they make such a product and, if so, what is it called, how is it applied and where can I get it?
I'd appreciate any/all suggestions, ideas or advice. I don't have much experience with tile and I'm not sure what type of product I should use. Thanks !!

Hi,
There are different types of ceramic tiles and which kind you have will help you in your selection of a sealer. Take a look here to see, even though it is for floors, it would be the same idea::

You can use epoxy for a really hard finish. If your group lines are deep, you might have to add some to those spots first and then coat the entire top.
How To Seal Ceramic Tiles With A Glossy Or Matte Sealer
https://www.tilecleaning.org/sealingceramictiles.htm
For standard tile cleaning without leaving a film, add 1/4 cup of white vinegar to 1 gallon of warm water, but increase the vinegar to a full cup if the tile countertop appears dull. Clean the entire surface, rinsing with clean water. Finish up with a wipe down of club soda to make the tiles shine.
You can get a tile and grout sealer. For maintenance clean with 1/2 c white vinegar 1/2 cup baking soda 1/2 tsp blue dawn 1 gallon hot water.
Kim I would not put any kind of lacquer or topping on the tiles as you are going to use this for crafts. It will mar and scratch and you will not be happy with it. I would go to HD, Lowes or Floor and Decor and get a good tile sealer such as Miracle Sealer Impregnator Sealer for Stone, Tile, Slate, Ceramic, Quartz Never use vinegar and water on tile, it will cause it to etch. Take a spray bottle, fill it about 1/8th full with rubbing alcohol, add a drop of Dawn dish washing soap, a few drops of scented oil (optional, but makes it smell so good), fill the rest of the way with water, shake together, and you’re good to go! It makes your granite (or any counter-top) shine and feel so smooth at a fraction of the price. I learned that trick from a professional who owns a stone yard.
. It also seals the grout.
I would simply seal the grout (reapply according to directions) and you should be good to go. Happy crafting!
Hi Kimm, you can use a tile and grout sealer. You'll find it at most hardware stores and it's really easy to apply with a brush or a roller.
Hello Kimmpossible, here is a great video and product to get this done, hope it helps you out,
