You can use craft paint then seal with clear spray paint, or spray polyurethane.

  • I would use an outdoor spray paint - taping off different areas for the different colors.

Hello, consider using spray paint. Spray paints now have paint and primer formulations that have outstanding coverage and durability.

Here are some other spray painting tips. Hope this helps.

    Rustoleum recommendations

    PREPARE:

Always work in a well-ventilated area. Cover the floor and nearby items with a drop cloth. Lightly scuff any glossy surfaces and wipe clean with a lint-free cloth. Use Painter’s tape to hide any surfaces you don’t want to paint.

    PAINT:

Using slow, back-and-forth motions, spray paint each item with several light coats of spray paint, making sure to overlap each stroke slightly. Apply 2-3 coats of spray paint, waiting a few minutes in between each coat.

    FINISH:

Let spray paint dry for approximately 1 hour before handling.

Tip: Use of 2X Ultra Cover Primer in White provides better paint coverage and color.

When I did some, I cleaned well and wiped with alcohol. Then used RustOleum spray paint. The tricky part is where the colors change. I did the first, lighter colors, then used newspaper and painter's tape to cover that once it was thoroughly dry to add darker color. Repeat for each color.

Hi Sheila, the easiest way would be to use spray paint. Rust-Oleum has so many colors to choose from and most of their out door range has a rust inhibitor built in

Do you have pictures? I'm assuming they are colorful. I would just give them another coat of the color that they are using exterior paint. Maybe finish them off with a clear coat of a sealer to hopefully help the color to last longer.

Old, rusted metal is easy to repaint and refinish, and there are many neglected metal objects out there that are worth saving with a little touch-up and a little paint.

A metal restoration project takes just a little effort, some sandpaper, and paint, and can extend the usefulness of many vintage items such as this fuel tank for a small outboard motor. The steps outlined here will work for restoring many different types of metal items, including old toys, outdoor chairs, tables, and garden benches.

The key to a good paint job lies in the preparation. Sanding off all of the old paint and rust is crucial to obtaining a smooth and professional-looking finish. With a little time and effort, repainting a used metal item saves money and gives new life to many old items.
