It's that time of year and here come the ants.
We have them too, mainly in the kitchen, so what we do is get a box or 2 of jiffy corn muffin mix and sprinkle it outdoors of the rooms they are in, do not bake it. The worker ants that are lookiing for food will take it back to the colony and it will kill them, but you will need actual poison to kill the queen, whose purpose is reproduction. To do this, like Vimarhonor contributed, use Terro, it is a great product.
We use it on the deck or any place you see a parade (stream) of them.
If you can locate the colony and can pour boiling water on it, that will do the trick too.
The worker ants leave a trail of pheromones in your house where ever they travel, you will need to destroy this trail by cleaning with a product like white vinegar or a cleaner that you can safely use on your countertops.
Optigard is the best product on the market to kill the colony. People spray the worker ants outside the nest. Waste of time. Use tiny clear gel optiguard dots in their path and they take the poison into the nest to kill the queen. Otherwise they are going to produce MORE worker ants and the saga goes on.
Optigard is found on Amazon. Share tubes with neighbors as you only need a few tiny dots to do the trick.

It depends on what type of ants you have. I just killed 2 fire ant mounds with boiling water and some Amdro. Fire ants are hard to kill and you need to use a product made just for fire ants.
My husband uses an ant spray he gets at the hardware store and sprays it around the doors and windows outside.
Hello, this one can be used indoors or outside

Hello. I highly recommend the commercial products made by Terro. If you look over at the reviews and QA on Amazon and see how highly rated the traps are.
I have been using them both indoors and outdoors - and been very successful in my overall situation. Additionally- I sometimes do an exterior Home defense foundation perimeter type product as well for spiders. Hope this helps.
I am a huge fan of Sevin granules. I buy a large bag at Sam's and fill up several large coffee containers. When I walk around the yard I take it with me, sprinkle on any beds I see, and the next day they are gone.
