Hi, You need to use Paint for Steel. Prime, Undercoat and then Topcoat!
You would need to use DTM (Direct To Metal) paint. Sherman Williams makes some. Metal expands and contracts differently than wood from temp changes. Instructions are good from the links above. Use Kilz Multi Surface primer. That is what we used on the nursing home steel doors where I was maintenance supervisor.
I did not use primer and top coat. I painted with paint from Home Depot made for metal. 2 coats and it looks fabulous. The outside of the door is in hot sun much of the day as well and it is several years old and holding up well.

Chalk paint peeling
Hi there, while chalk paint has its uses, I wouldn't advise using it on steel, it does tend to peel off. Spray paint that has a built-in rust inhibitor, like Rust-Oleum will work better and it's easy to apply.
Your best bet is to use rustolium paint use a roller give the doors 2 coats that wil be nice .
Use a smooth 4-6 inch roller with Latex paint. Paint the insides if it is a 6 panel door then the outsides.
