Hi Deborah, I wouldn't use chalk paint on a garage door. It won't last in the elements. Your best bet would be to find a good exterior paint (latex or enamel) and use that
I would use latex paint only if you sand it first and use a good primer. It also depends on what your garage door is made from. Chalk paint is always my first choice but a primer works well too.
Use a good outdoor latex paint. Chalk paint will not work.
Use a good latex paint to repaint your garage door. You'll want to prep and prime first for lasting results.
I would get an exterior door paint that is formulated for the type of material. Sherwin Williams store is your best option IMO.
Rust Bullet RBA53 Automotive Rust Inhibitor Paint
You only need one layer, and you don’t need primer nor the top coating. Once applied, the paint looks great, and it can significantly make your garage door looks so much better.
The brand is known for the patent in which they developed a paint so easy to apply and use that it soon became the most popular choice on the market. This paint shares the same qualities. In addition, the presence of metal components allows the color to be applied in the thinned layer than usual. You can apply this paint using a roller, a brush, or a spray gun. The last, this paint can be applied over older paint or rust without any issues.
Pros:
Exterior grade rated paint would be recommended.

I use exterior latex paint for my steel garage doors. Less chance of cracking and peeling. Metal expands and contracts differently than wood.
Do not use chalk paint on your garage doors it will not hold up. Get a good exterior latex paint from Sherwin Williams or Benj. Moore.
if you are talking about an actual garage door do not use chalk paint on it but if you are talking about a door in your garage going into your house you can use chalk paint but it doesn't stand up well to scuff marks, etc.
Get a good latex paint made for exteriors, that way it can handle variations in weather extremes.
You can certainly use a latex paint on a garage door. In fact, I would recommend a latex paint on a garage door.
