Fig trees- transplanting them

I have two fig trees and I would like to transplant them to a different location in my yard. I live in a northern suburb of Atlanta, when is the best time to do so? Can I do it now or will it kill them?

I don't know about there, but October through february is the preferred time for planting here in Memphis.

This doesnt help with your post, but my wife keeps pestering me about fig trees. What kind do you have, or do you suggest? I am in Brooks, South-East Fayette Co

@Ana M: I think the safest time to do so would be late winter, when the tree is just about to break dormancy. I suspect this would be February for you. I have Turkey figs and they are prolific producers, but i have to constantly fight the squirrels to get them, the birds aren't greedy and I don't mind sharing but the squirrels are wasteful... fortunately I think the owls that have been visiting have cleaned out some of the over population that has plagued us and we may actually get a reasonable harvest this coming year...
