What color to paint above the kitchen cabinets

So I am stumped, as you may have seen from some of my other post, I am adding blue to my kitchen and family room. I'm trying to get out of the red's, greens, golds etc....should I paint above the cabinets the same color as the rest of the kitchen? Or repaint the entire kitchen and family room, but what color...PLUS I want to repaint that dining room you can see peeking through. I was thinking maybe the same color as my living room...it is a soft creme yellow and then maybe a soft blue for the dining room...hum...
sorry the photo is a bit dark...want to get rid of that red above the cabinets...thinking the same color as the rest of the kitchen or redo the kitchen in a soft creme like the living room pic.
this is the soft yellow...one day hoping to add blue into this room as well along with the dinning room....will need to recover the sofas for sure...

paint above the cabinets white, that way whatever you display up there will show nicely. the dining room I would do a light grey blue. have fun

@Geri P hi Geri, do you mean the same as the other part of the kitchen or the cream that is in the living room....thanks

@Geri P I just re-did our kitchen....using a cream above a chair rail & white beadboard wallpaper below and there is such a difference it it unreal....go light...you will love it! Looks like a great kitchen!!

Or you could do the opposite and paint walls cream and the cabinets the light blue

My software ? makes the red above cabs look black. My first impression was that is really sharp! I see red through the door. My thought was to continue with black frames for your 3 pics and paint the applique over the double doors black, too. The background in your living room rug also shows black which carries through from the kitchen as it shows. As it shows, I thought it looked nice.

I think you need some color on your walls. Gray would be beautiful. I would paint the walls all the same color to bring it all together. You need contrast between the cabinets and the walls. I would recommend Sherwin Williams comfort grey or any of the greys on the same color sheet. Also paint the wall above your cabinet the same color of your walls.

Paint the area above the cabinetry the same color as the rest of the kitchen.

How about a dark Navy? Also check Pottery Barn's March catalogue, much of the decorating is done with blues. I also like the idea of gray in your kitchen too. Gray is the new neutral.

Regina you have a beautiful home. I think that painting your dining room to match the living room is going in a good direction. How about painting the ceiling a light sky blue. Then paint your island that same blue and the space above the cabinets the same color as the family room walls.

@Pam Bolton what a great idea! @Reginaeaster your home is beautiful. Anything you do will look great. Gray is definitely coming to the forefront in home decorating.

Add some contrast by doing a different color on the island. I have several more pictures on my website CkCustomRemodeling.com

Like the soft tans and crèmes. Would continue them into dining rm to keep all looking spacious. Yes, rid of the red over cabinets; no more black.

Maybe go fora pastel olive green or maybe Duckegg Blue.

  • Hi Regina! You can use light colors. It makes the room more lighter and bigger. Hope this helps!
