How to lighten a very dark room

Debi53 on Jun 19, 2015Are you able to paint the walls? If so, I would go with bright white. I am not usually a fan of white walls, but it will give the brightest look. Also, consider simple white blinds & sheers instead of heavy drapes. Another possibility is to cover the glass in your windows with privacy widow film. This can be found at any home improvement store & just requires scissors & water to stick it to the windows & is removable. This will give privacy, but let in light. You could also leave a portion of the top of the window without the privacy film to let in more light & have a view. Mirrors hung on walls where they reflect the windows also help to brighten a space. Light color slipcovers or even light colored pillows on furniture and reducing knickknacks helps. Use white linens (towels, bath rugs, bedspreads, placemats, etc.) Also, try having negative space--space where there is just nothing. In other words, don't fill every corner & wall with something. Just having some negative space especially if you have light colored walls helps to lighten the room. Best of luck.Helpful Reply

Barb on Jun 20, 2015Paint the walls of you can and hang mirrors where they can reflect the light from windows. Maybe light slipcovers or throws on the furniture would help as well. Good luck!Helpful Reply

Ginger the farm gal on Jun 22, 2015Try so clear or LED christmas lights around the wall, I did this in my kitchen, when I don't want the over head on but just a little accent light for a cherry feeling. Many blessings in your new abode, and enjoy everyday :)Helpful Reply

Cheryl on Jun 23, 2015I had the same problem in a condo which had only one tall skinny window which faced north so we had very little light.I painted the walls white white, made sure my furniture throws were white. Get a very light throw rug and throw pillows can add color. If you have any item which can be used as an end table get two end table lights. They add ambiance and light up a room where you need the light. Good luck on your transition into your new abode. It won't cost much to lighten the room....just look for thrift store bargains if you can. And mirrors are great on the walls....get non matching frames ...it adds character as well as reflecting light. Cheryl Taylor......West Jordan, UTHelpful Reply
